When you come in for an initial assessment with me, my goal is usually very simple: to get a clear picture of where you’ve come from, what your currently doing and where you're heading.
You can expect it to feel more like a conversation with some movement mixed in — not a fitness test you need to prepare for or “pass.”
About your first session
Often, in healthcare appointments, there isn’t much time to unpack more detailed concepts or explain how current evidence applies to your situation.
Here, I set aside time to make things clearer from the start, answer your questions and help you feel more confident about what we’re doing and why.

From there, we usually do a few simple assessments to understand how your body is moving right now, which might include:
-
checking posture or general movement patterns
-
looking at mobility and stabilising ability
-
functional tests
Nothing is designed to push you to exhaustion or catch you out. If something doesn’t feel right, we modify.

Typically, we’d start by sitting down and talking for a bit. I'll ask about things like:
-
What brings you in and what would you like help with
-
Your health history and any injuries, pain, medical conditions, surgeries, or concerns
-
What your day-to-day activity looks like at the moment
-
Past experiences with exercise — what you’ve enjoyed, disliked, or found difficult
-
Goals you have (these can be broad, like feeling stronger, improving your wellbeing and overall health, moving with less discomfort or building confidence in your own body again)
At the end of the session
By the end of the session, we’d usually talk through:
-
what stood out from the assessment
-
your action plan
-
what the first few sessions could involve and how progress might be measured
